The Hanen Program: Specialized individual and small group learning
“It Takes Two to Talk” is a program developed by the Hanen Centre for parents of young children (under the age of 5) with language delays. Jennifer is a Hanen-certified Speech and Language Pathologist who can lead a 13-week program that is designed to benefit learning for parents. Jennifer guides you every step of the way, helping you learn specific interaction strategies that can be applied in your daily interactions with your own child.
After completing the Hanen coursework and becoming a certified Hanen SLP, Jennifer discovered that those who were trained in and used these strategies were forever changed. Our goal is to empower parents on this journey. Jennifer believes in the effectiveness of parent-implemented therapy techniques.
- understanding your child’s ‘stage’ and ‘style’ of communication (and why that’s important to know)
- figuring out what motivates your child to interact with you
- encouraging your child to start interactions with you and keep them going through interactional turn taking
- following your child’s lead to encourage continued interaction
- helping your child take turns and keep interactions going
- fine-tuning the way you talk during interactions to build your child’s expression
- understanding how to use daily routines to increase your child’s communication
What strategies will I learn and apply to my own child?

Where will the "It Takes Two To Talk" program take place?
Parents can elect:
- Small group format or individual in person at the office
- Small group format or individual using tele-practice
When will the "It Takes Two To Talk" program be provided?
Parent implemented therapy group sessions will be offered at least one week apart. Sessions are offered in the evenings to accommodate parent schedules or on Saturdays.
How is the program designed?
Due to the interactive small group nature of this class, families build peer connection and utilize one another for support. All sessions are 2.5 hours (8 total). We will meet bi-weekly. Sessions will be scheduled to accommodate parent work schedules.
